Overview

In 2024, FTG was approached to facilitate the conceptual design and implementation of a geotextile-based coastal protection structure to defend the valuable ocean-front property of an official of the Government of Nigeria. This property had been under constant threat due to severe erosion at the base of the previously constructed seaward wall.

This geotextile tube was to be a temporary solution, as later phases of construction, also designed and facilitated by FTG, would see the installation of a series of near-shore segmented breakwaters.

After multiple web-based training and planning sessions with our industry partners, the installation of the coastal protection structure along the shoreline was completed in one month.

Challenges

  • Site conditions at the time of construction differed significantly from those observed during FTG’s initial site visit. Severe and prolonged winter-season storms had eroded large quantities of sand from the local beaches.

  • The beach directly in front of the property was approximately 5–6 ft lower than initially designed for, and the foundation of the property’s seaward wall was partially exposed.

  • Installation teams had to contend with poorly implemented temporary protective measures (concrete-filled tires).

  • Language barriers with local contractors and constant tidal incursions limited the available working hours.

Solution

A TITANTube® and Anti-Scour Apron solution was installed in front of the ocean-front property to prevent the sea from interacting with and scouring sand at the base of the wall. Despite only being designed as a temporary solution, the TITANTube® structure is still in place and maintains its protective capacity.

Benefits

  • Fast Installation: simple installation with no need for heavy machinery or complex logistics at remote sites.
  • High Sand Retention: specially designed TITANTube® units were able to capture a greater percentage of fine sands on site.
  • Superior UV Stability: engineered to withstand exposure in coastal environments.

Key Objectives

  • Protect valuable ocean-front property against sea incursion and scouring
  • Serve as temporary immediate protection until Phase II of the project is implemented
