Frequently Asked Questions

HSWG reinforcement is particularly valuable where foundation soils are soft, organic, saturated, or otherwise have low bearing capacity — conditions where a levee or embankment would experience excessive settlement, lateral spreading, or foundation shear failure without tensile reinforcement at the base. Soils like soft clays, peats, and saturated silts are common triggers. FTG can review geotechnical data for a specific site and provide a recommendation on whether Flintex™ reinforcement is appropriate and at what strength grade.

Yes. In levee rehabilitation projects, Flintex™ HSWG reinforcement is typically placed within the new fill section added during raising or widening — not beneath the existing embankment. This means the existing levee structure remains in place and serves as a foundation for the rehabilitation work. The reinforcement layer is integrated into the new fill to provide the tensile capacity the expanded structure requires. In cases where the existing levee foundation itself is compromised, a more extensive stabilization scope may be needed, which FTG can evaluate in coordination with the project’s geotechnical team.

There is no practical upper limit on panel width when panels are field seamed. FTG has seamed panels into continuous reinforcement sheets covering multiple acres on lagoon closure projects, and the same approach applies to levee reinforcement. Panel dimensions are determined by the project’s reinforcement layout and installation logistics — not by fabric roll width. This is one of the key advantages of field seaming over prefabricated panels, which are limited to whatever width the manufacturer produces.

Deep foundation alternatives — stone columns, wick drains with preloading, deep soil mixing — are effective but typically far more expensive and time-consuming than geotextile reinforcement at the base of an embankment. HSWG reinforcement does not improve the foundation soil itself; it manages the load the soil is asked to carry by distributing it more broadly. For situations where the foundation soil can carry the distributed load (as calculated from the geotechnical data), HSWG reinforcement is a cost-effective first option. For sites with extremely poor foundation conditions, a combined approach or soil improvement may be warranted — and FTG can help evaluate the options.

At minimum: foundation soil characterization (shear strength, bearing capacity, depth to competent material), embankment geometry (height, base width, side slopes), and the design load case (normal operation, flood stage, seismic if applicable). FTG uses this information to determine the tensile requirement for the reinforcement layer and match it to an appropriate Flintex™ grade. Sharing the geotechnical report and embankment cross-section is the fastest path to a specific fabric recommendation. FTG makes recommendations in the context of the geotechnical engineer’s analysis and overall design.

Yes. Geotextile reinforcement for temporary haul roads and access ways is a common and cost-effective application. For temporary roads, a lighter-grade Flintex™ product is often appropriate, and the fabric can be recovered and reused at the end of the project if it has been protected from mechanical damage. FTG can advise on fabric grade selection and installation approach for both temporary and permanent road reinforcement applications.
