Frequently Asked Questions — Flintex™ Geotextiles
In-situ solidification injects binding agents throughout the sludge body to create a solid matrix — expensive, slow, and difficult to verify uniformly at large scale. Geotextile sludge cap reinforcement with Flintex™ Geotextiles achieves the same functional outcome — a stable surface supporting cap fill and permanently isolating the sludge — at a fraction of the cost per acre. Coronet Industries’ closure project is this at 160-acre scale.
Mud waves are created when very soft saturated clay is loaded in one area causing a wave of sludge away from the loaded area. Flintex™ high strength woven geotextile (HSWG) seamed by FTG and anchored by the general contractor reinforces, confines and filters the sludge and the specialized backfill operation together with the HSWG controls the mud waves to allow for the final cap to be placed.
FTG’s own field services team performs all Flintex™ Geotextiles field seaming — on every project, every phase. The seaming equipment, personnel training, and quality control documentation are FTG’s. Seam quality in a geotextile sludge cap reinforcement project is an environmental outcome, and FTG seams every panel to hold up as it is engineered to do.
Tensile strength depends on cap load, sludge bearing capacity, embankment geometry, and acceptable settlement tolerance. FTG evaluates these project-specific parameters to specify the OS grade. FTG offers a range of Flintex™ to address each project’s specific needs. For levee and soft soil reinforcement, grade is selected based on the geotechnical design parameters.
