What Our Clients Say

“

“We had great success capping a 60 acre process pond by reinforcing the sludge with FTG's geotextile. Unlike an earlier experience with another fabric and supplier, we had assistance from beginning to end from FTG, ensuring that the fabric had adequate strength, seams were sewn properly, and deployment was done correctly. We give the strongest recommendation to FTG.”

How Geotextile Sludge Cap Reinforcement Works

FTG’s field services team seams Flintex™ panels on site to exact specifications — covering 10 or more acres per phase. The geotextile acts as sludge separator and reinforcement layer, allowing cap fill to be placed safely above very low-shear-strength sludge, and the cap work proceeds without solidification.

A carefully engineered backfill placement sequence is as important as the fabric. Improper fill sequencing triggers mud waves — successive slip failures that create unstable subsurface layers, increase settlement, and compromise long-term cap integrity. FTG designs the placement sequence alongside the fabric specification. Both arrive together. Neither gets handed off.

Frequently Asked Questions

A sludge cap is a cover system placed over a contaminated lagoon or pond to permanently isolate the material from the environment. Sludge often has very low bearing capacity — potentially near-zero vane shear strength — so conventional construction equipment and fill materials require a reinforcement solution before they can be placed above it. A high-strength woven geotextile reinforcement layer distributes the load of cap fill across the surface, making stable construction possible above material that would otherwise be unworkable.

Mud waves are a failure mechanism specific to cap construction over very soft, saturated sludge. Fill placed too quickly or without a proper sequencing plan triggers lateral slip failures in the underlying sludge — waves of displaced material that propagate outward beneath the cap. The result: unstable subsurface layers, increased settlement, water infiltration paths, and compromised long-term integrity. FTG’s engineered backfill placement sequence is specifically designed to prevent mud wave formation. This is the difference between a geotextile sludge cap that performs for decades and one that fails in the years after installation.

In-situ solidification injects binding agents throughout the sludge mass — expensive, slow, and difficult to verify uniformly at large scale. Geotextile sludge cap reinforcement achieves the same outcome at a fraction of the cost per acre. The Coronet Industries closure — 160 acres across four ponds — is this cost advantage in action at scale, earning an IFAI Achievement Award.

FTG’s own field services team performs all Flintex™ seaming. Seam quality is the critical variable in a sludge cap reinforcement system — it is where the system’s performance lives. FTG seams its own panels, with equipment and quality control processes developed over 30 years of large-area lagoon seaming work.
