How Geotextile Sludge Cap Reinforcement Works
FTG’s field services team seams Flintex™ panels on site to exact specifications — covering 10 or more acres per phase. The geotextile acts as sludge separator and reinforcement layer, allowing cap fill to be placed safely above very low-shear-strength sludge, and the cap work proceeds without solidification.
A carefully engineered backfill placement sequence is as important as the fabric. Improper fill sequencing triggers mud waves — successive slip failures that create unstable subsurface layers, increase settlement, and compromise long-term cap integrity. FTG designs the placement sequence alongside the fabric specification. Both arrive together. Neither gets handed off.
Geotextile Cap Reinforcement Benefits
- Isolates sludge and reduces environmental exposure
- Minimizes water infiltration, erosion, and contaminant migration
- Limits settlement, cracking, and mud wave formation
- Supports backfill for final site reclamation
- Meets FDEP, RCRA, and CERCLA closure requirements
- Lower costs than in-situ solidification alternatives
- Demonstrated across 160-acre, 4-phase, 16-year closure programs
