Open-water dredging stirs up fine sediment particles that reduce water clarity — a condition called turbidity. Elevated turbidity can harm aquatic ecosystems, and subaquatic vegetation (SAV) beds are among the most sensitive. Traditional turbidity barriers help contain the problem, but they have real limitations in high-energy environments. Flint’s award-winning TITANBoom™ (patent pending) was designed specifically to address those limitations.
The Limitation of Traditional Turbidity Boom
Conventional turbidity boom floats at the water surface with a skirt extending downward. In higher-energy conditions — where currents, wave action, or vessel traffic are present — traditional boom can billow, rise off the bottom, or shift position, leaving gaps near the seafloor through which turbid water escapes. These bottom gaps are particularly harmful to SAV beds, which rely on light penetration and can be damaged by even short periods of elevated turbidity.
How TITANBoom™ Is Different
TITANBoom™ is designed for full contact with the bottom of the water column — sealing against the sea floor across its entire length. This provides complete protection of subaquatic vegetation with minimal contact area, meaning less disturbance to the benthic environment while achieving better turbidity containment than a surface-skirt boom can provide.
