Overview

A major sand-processing operation in South Africa needed a high-performance dewatering solution for fines generated during the washing of crushed dolomitic aggregate. They needed to find a better alternative for drying their material, as reducing the loss of production and costs caused by waiting for material to dry was critical to business continuity.

Geotextile TITANTube® dewatering units were planned for deployment within the area and layout specified by the client, to improve the quality of the slurry and dewater it to a more efficient moisture level — delivering consistent, sale-ready sand product with minimal manual handling.

Challenges

The client produces premium washed sand, but the post-wash slurry remained too wet for direct handling, stockpiling, or sale. To unlock throughput capacity and reduce drying time, the operation integrated a geotextile tube dewatering system in conjunction with an automated flocculant dosing plant. The project focused on improving moisture reduction, maintaining production continuity, and delivering consistent, sale-ready sand product with minimal handling.

Solution

A modular, automated polymer make-up and dosing system — including hydration tank, agitator, dosing pumps (duty/standby), calibration column, injection lines, instrumentation, and control panel — was installed alongside multiple geotextile tubes laid on a purpose-built drainage pad with a low gradient to channel filtrate safely to the return-water system. Slurry delivery pipelines were routed from the washing plant to the polymer system and then to the tubes. The system was designed to align with existing plant layouts while allowing for future expansion as output increases. Slurry from the wash plant enters the automated polymer system where hydrated flocculant binds suspended fines, forming structured floc. Treated slurry is then pumped into the tubes, retaining solids while filtrate drains freely. Once sand reaches target moisture levels, tubes are opened and dewatered material is reclaimed for sale. This approach enabled continuous operation with minimal intervention.

Benefits

  • High solids capture ensured maximum recovery of saleable sand product from every fill cycle.
  • Cleaner filtrate returned to the plant’s water circuit, reducing freshwater demand and improving overall process water quality.
  • Consistent product quality was maintained across production runs, enabling direct stockpiling and sale without additional drying time.
