A chrome wash plant in Northwest, South Africa was experiencing a progressive decline in the quality of its return process water. Fine suspended solids were accumulating within the water circuit and being continuously recirculated back through the plant. This sludge build-up reduced the volume of clean water available for processing, placed additional pressure on the washing circuit and negatively affected overall plant productivity. A geotextile tube dewatering system was implemented to remove suspended solids, recover clarified water and improve the efficiency of the plant’s water circuit.
Challenges
Fine chrome solids were building up in the plant’s return-water system. As the sludge concentration increased, the quality of the recycled water deteriorated. This affected the washing process, reduced the volume of usable water available and placed additional strain on the plant’s operation. The solution needed to fit into the existing process and manage changing sludge conditions.
Solution
A lined dewatering area was installed together with TITANTube® geotextile dewatering tubes, a flocculation system, process piping and static mixers. The sludge was conditioned before entering the tubes, allowing the solids to bind together more effectively. The tubes retained the chrome-bearing solids while clarified filtrate passed through the fabric and was returned to the plant for reuse.
Benefits
Improved Water Quality: Suspended solids were removed from the return-water stream.
Increased Productivity: Cleaner process water supported improved plant performance.
Controlled Solids Management: Retained material was consolidated inside the tubes for easier handling.
